Who can join the group?
Anyone can join SFRAW so long as they are willing and able to do three primary, non-negotiable things:
Complete/sign the membership forms and always follow our Member Code of Conduct
Pay your annual, non-refundable membership fee
Fulfill the annual volunteer requirement. Exemptions include: Licensed CA veterinarians and members that sign-up under the "Non-Volunteer" Membership Level.
There are no minimum order requirements. Members must have internet access, read email regularly, and be able to place orders online through our shopping cart. Obviously, you also need to live in/near the SF Bay Area/Northern-CA to participate.
How do I join the group?
To join the group, simply visit our Join page and follow the instructions there to become a member.
How do I leave the group?
To leave the group is a two step process involving 1) the Yahoo Group and 2) your annual membership fee/PayPal subscription. To leave the Yahoo Group, simply send a blank e-mail to: sfraw-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com. Membership fees are non-refundable. Membership fees paid are not refunded if you do not use your membership. When leaving the group, be sure to cancel the recurring subscription service you signed-up for with PayPal by logging into your PayPal account and canceling your annual subscription with "Rara Avis SF". Go here to see the steps on how to do this if you are unsure how. That way you won't continued to be charged the annual membership fee when you are no longer an active member. We never charge anyone's accounts because we never keep credit card, bank or payment information on file, but if you don't cancel your annual subscription, you will continued to be charged annually until you cancel the subscription service/auto-payment.
How do I send a message to the group?
To send a message to the group, simply send a message via e-mail to: sfraw@yahoogroups.com.
I'm getting too many emails from the list. How do I change my settings?
You can change your Message Delivery type from any of the below options at any time, as often as you like:
Individual emails - sends individual e-mail messages. (this is the default setting)
Daily digest - sends you one e-mail message with all that day's emails in the body of the message.
Special notices - your will only receive important announcement emails from the group owner.
No e-mail - you'll never get e-mail from the list, but can read the messages at the Web site.
To change your e-mail settings, login to the group at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sfraw/ and click on the "[ Edit My Membership ]" link on the right hand side of the home page. If you can't figure it out, just e-mail me and I'll be happy to edit your settings for you.
What about volunteering?
Volunteering is central to the group's existence and we have an annual requirement for our members. We require that SFRAW members volunteer at least 8-hours per CALENDAR year (Jan-Dec.) in order to be eligible to place orders with the group. New members must complete their volunteer shift/job first BEFORE placing an order. Most volunteer jobs take place in San Francisco. The only exceptions to this rule is for members that sign-up for the Non-Volunteer Membership Level and licensed CA veterinarians that support raw feeding; pro-raw veterinarians are exempt from our volunteer requirement.
There are a variety of volunteer jobs that need to be covered monthly. Please review our volunteer page for more information on the different volunteer jobs available. Our volunteer sign-up sheets are posted several months in advance on the Yahoo Groups site. New members must volunteer before placing their first order. Existing members must complete their volunteer job by the end of Sept. to remain in good standing. Please read our Member Code of Conduct and Volunteer page for more details.
What is the SFRAW Member Code of Conduct?
SFRAW is a volunteer run buyer's group, not a pet food service. Every member is expected to contribute - being personally responsible for their orders and participation with the group. To that end, all SFRAW members must agree to and follow the below member code of conduct:
1) VOLUNTEER: If you would like to place an order with SFRAW, you must volunteer at least 8-hrs. per calendar year. Existing active members must complete 3-hrs. of their volunteer work by the end of Sept. New members must complete their volunteer job first before placing an order with the group - no exceptions*.
2) PICK-UP: Be on time and follow the site rules for your pick-up location. Starting a month in advance - your order is reviewed/calculated and complied into individual wholesale orders with our different suppliers, paid for, confirmed in advance, delivered, organized, handled (usually more than once), printed, and reserved for you specifically. All members must place advance orders through the sfraw.com website during the open order period(s). All members must pick-up their order(s) at the specified pick-up location(s), on the pick-up date(s), and during specific pick-up hours listed. If you fail to retrieve your order at this specific time/date/location, you agree to forfeit your order in full without reimbursement or a refund.
3) STAY CURRENT: Pay any money requests sent to you via PayPal or outstanding balance notices within 60 days. Keep current with notices and announcements made through the Yahoo Groups list; we do not contact people individually as a rule. Nearly all communication is made through the Yahoo Groups site, so make sure you are reading these messages regularly.
Non-Compliance and Membership Suspension/Cancellation: If a member has ordered, but not yet volunteered by the end of Sept., their membership will be suspended without notice or additional reminders. All order(s) placed by such non-compliant members will be cancelled/refunded until a volunteer job has been actually completed. After completing a volunteer job in full, these members can start placing orders again. Members that fail to pick-up their order(s) at the specified pick-up location(s), on the pick-up date(s), and during specific pick-up hours listed more than once per year or once per every four (4) orders placed will have their membership suspended indefinitely/cancelled. Members that do not pay outstanding balances within 60 days will have their membership suspended until the balance is paid in full.
* Licensed CA veterinarians that promote raw feeding and members that sign-up for the Non-Volunteer Membership Level are exempt from fulfilling the annual volunteer requirement.
How do I get a username and password to gain access to member pages?
You must complete the membership process (list, forms, fee, volunteer) to receive pick-up location information, have access to the pricelist, download page, and to place orders through SFRAW. To join the group, please visit our join page. After you complete the four steps of the membership process, including the *completion* of at least one volunteer shift, the login credentials will be sent to the email address on your subscription payment receipt. Be sure to use a working email address that you check frequently! More information on membership responsibility and volunteering can be found here: Member Responsibility Checklist; Volunteer Requirement; Volunteer Job Descriptions.
Why am I having trouble opening/reading or downloading documents from SFRAW?
Most of our files are available in a PDF format. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed, please download a free copy of this software here. This software will allow for you to open and read PDF documents.
Is there anything I need to do before placing my first order?
Yes - you need to join the Yahoo Group list, READ/sign and submit the necessary forms, pay your membership fee, and complete your volunteer requirement. Once you do these four things, you are ready to place an order!
To make ordering as easy as can be, we highly recommend that you register with PayPal about 7 days before placing your first order. We use PayPal's shopping cart and collect payments for orders using PayPal's military-grade, safe and secure payment system.
When can I place an order?
Orders are placed and picked-up on a monthly schedule. Orders going to the NORTH/EAST pick-up locations are placed from the 1-10th of every month for pick-up on the 1st Saturday of the following month. Orders going to the SF/SOUTH pick-up locations are placed from the 11-20th of every month for pick-up on the 3rd Saturday of the following month. You'll want to pay close attention to our ordering and pick-up schedules, as well as pay attention to e-mails about changes in ordering dates and pick-up schedules on our e-mail list. Orders can be placed only during our specified order periods, and must be picked-up on our specified pick-up dates during specific time frames.
I might not make it to pick-up my order, can you store/hold or ship it to me?
We do not ship orders. We do not store orders with the single exception of those members scheduled to pick-up orders at our location in San Francisco (250 Napoleon Street, Unit G). ONLY this location has storage available; there is a $15 storage fee if we need to store for you for any reason. If you cannot make it to a pick-up date/time -- do not place an order the month before! However, if something serious and unavoidable comes up so that you can no longer make it to pick-up your order after you've already placed it - contact us immediately. If there is enough time to do so before the pick-up date (7 days before pick-up), Kasie will try her best to cancel the order and refund your money. Alternatively, you can contact members via the Yahoo Group list to make arrangements with other members to pick-up your order and hold it for you. You can also choose to sell your order to other members via the Yahoo Group list before the pick-up date, if it is too late to cancel for a refund.
Not picking up your order on time or failing to pick-up is a serious infraction of the membership rules and Code of Conduct. If you are late or fail to pick up your order during the specified pick-up time frame, on the specified pick-up date, your order will be donated or distributed (exception: at SF-Napoleon ONLY, you will be charged $15 and we will store for you to pick-up during the next scheduled Freezer Sale dates). You will not be eligible for a refund. If this happens at one of the neighborhood/regional pick-up sites, you will also lose privileges for picking up at these locations, and you will be re-assigned to pick-up future orders at the San Francisco-Napoleon Street location indefinitely. This is our group policy as explained in our disclaimers, which are viewable on each page of this website and sent out to the Yahoo Group list once a month.
How do I place an order?
Ordering is easy! Simply visit our Order page, and use the shopping cart buttons to place and pay for your order. Only members that have paid their membership fee can login to order. Since some items are not available when others are, you may not see shopping cart buttons for all the items every time you go to place an order. Only items with a shopping cart button are available when you go to place an order. If you have any questions about an items availability, just ask us about it.
Can I pay by check, money order or cash?
We no longer take checks, cash or money orders and request that all members order through the website shopping cart. Here, you can pay via credit card, e-check or PayPal direct transfer. The reason why we do this is that if everyone uses the same shopping cart system, it is much easier for me to download and keep track of all the orders, for your order to be accounted for properly, and better for me for accounting purposes. It also makes it easier for your order to be ordered/sorted correctly and quickly by the volunteers on the pick-up day.
Where do we pick-up the orders?
We currently have several remote/regional pick-up locations throughout the SF Bay Area/Northern-CA. We have weekly pick-ups from our main location in San Francisco. We have monthly pick-ups available in Oakland; Berkeley; Pittsburg; San Rafael; Fairfax; Corte Madera; Pacifica; Redwood City; San Jose; Santa Rosa and Mendocino. Delivery to each location is dependant on meeting a minimum weight requirement (see this page for details on weight minimums for each location). Members can always pick-up their orders at the SFRAW-Napoleon Street location on Saturday from 12-5pm instead of the regional/neighborhood locations. We can also arrange for you to pick-up your order at the SFRAW warehouse in San Francisco on Friday night from 5-7PM - this is the earliest an order can be picked up and is only an option for this location.
What other order and pick-up options are available to group members?
We have Freezer Sale events at the SFRAW-Napoleon Street location every week. These sales are open to the public and anyone can drop in to make purchases from the stock we have available. A limited selection of products are available at these sales events. We do not take special orders or reserve products for these sales. Payment is by cash, check or PayPal mobile only.
Members frequently help others in the same area with pick-ups, and sometimes there is even an order chain -- for example, one person picks up orders for several people and takes them to a central location. The only catch is, you need to work out this type of arrangement yourself with the people involved as we cannot facilitate these sorts of arrangements. The Contacts database includes the city where people live, making it easy to contact others to to help facilitate this kind of cooperation ahead of time. You can also email the list to find others in your area to make arrangements with.
How big are the cases? Do you sell by the pound?
We do not weigh product or sell product by the pound (unless it is already packaged/sold by the single lb. by the supplier). All fresh/frozen case and packaged food weights are estimates only and listed weights are provided by our suppliers. We ONLY sell "by the each" - this means you get a case, bag, bottle, or whatever for a listed price. The products we order come in an estimated 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 30 or 40-pound bag or box. The range for case sizes varies from vendor and product. Items for some ground and trim products start at 1-pound bags and go up from there. Again, there is no minimum order and you can order as much or as little as you need, but you must order by the size/portion listed; we do not sell split cases or portion out packaged products.
What if my order arrives and the weight is not even close to what I expected?
We do the best we can to represent the products listed in the shopping cart and pricelist as accurately as possible from the information we receive from our vendors. Some vendors are really good about delivering accurate and reliable weights - these are usually products that come packaged into what are called "chubs". However, most products we sell are not chubbed, and case weights can vary. Since we only sell by the bag/box and not by the pound - the weights listed on our pricelist and shopping cart are only there to give you a general idea of what to expect when ordering, not a guarantee for a product's weight. Sometimes a product will arrive in quantities that are very different than what we expected/ordered. In these situations, members do have to take home and pay the extra for additional weight delivered - you are expected to take and pay for whatever the vendor sends us for your order.
The actual weights for some products are printed on the case or bags by our vendors. If you order something and the actual printed weight is 12% over or under the estimated weight listed in our shopping cart/your invoice, you will receive a refund for the missing product or will be required to pay for additional weight delivered. We do not have a scale at the pick-up location (would need to be calibrated/certified/licensed by CA Weights and Measures), and unless you have one of these certified/calibrated scales at home then we do not honor weights you come up with at home. Weights listed on the boxes or bags by our vendors are the weights we go by for the 12% rule. If a weight is not printed/listed on the packaging for a product by one of our vendors when it is delivered, then the product is sold "as is" by the bag/box for the price listed on the website.
Can I buy half a case or split a case?
Cases are sold by the each so you cannot directly buy a partial or split case, but all members are welcome to split cases with other members. We DO NOT get involved with case splits - this is something you arrange and organize on your own with other members.
To split a case, one member e-mails the list to ask if others want to split a case with them. If they get a response, they then make arrangements with the other member(s) privately on how they will split the case, who will pick it up, where they will do the actual splitting of the case, who will do the splitting and who will purchase the whole case. Then one person buys the whole case as part of their order though the website. The actual splitting of the case can take place on the pick-up day, or after one member picks-up the case to split elsewhere (at home, for example - if those splitting a case are neighbors). The actual splitting the case is the full responsibility of the members who arranged the split.
NOTE: The person doing the split must bring bags or other containers for all orders to be made out of the box. The group will not/can not provide bags or boxes for splits. Volunteers, SFRAW managers or site hosts will not and do not get involved with, facilitate or manage split orders or cases - splits are a self-serve, "at your own risk" situation!
What if what I ordered does not arrive?
This happens every month to some extent, so be sure to have a back-up source for food in case something you order doesn't arrive or was out of stock from our vendors. We do not backorder product or re-order for future orders/next time. Please re-order through the website if you want to order the product for a future pick-up date. You will get a refund for any product that is not delivered as noted on your invoice the day of pick-up. When we review/check-out your order at the pick-up site, we make a notation on your invoice that the product did not arrive. If your order is delivered by us, we make a copy of this invoice and pack it with your order (usually taped to one of your boxes). Refunds are credited back directly/electronically to whatever source you used to pay for the product originally (credit card, PayPal account, eCheck, etc.). Refunds are processed within 30-45 business days after the pick-up date, though your bank or credit card company may take an additional 3-5 days to show the refund in your account.
What about parking?
Yes -- we have parking! Our location in San Francisco has four reserved parking spaces in a private lot directly outside/in front of our unit. There is additional unrestricted, free street parking on Napoleon Street - parking is especially plentiful on evenings and weekends. Parking is a non-issue at our San Francisco location, but our neighborhood/regional pick-up locations can have parking limitations and requirements for that site.
What if I am unhappy with the products I purchased or when I get home I realize I brought home the wrong items?
It is essential that you examine your order carefully when you pick-up to verify that your order is correct. Although volunteers work hard to pull the right items and we have a check-out process to catch most errors, in the end, it is each member's own responsibility to make sure their order is correct (both when placed and when picked-up).
Because nearly everything we sell is extremely perishable, all sales are final and we can not guarantee the freshness or integrity of the products beyond the closing hour on pick-up day. If you are unhappy with the quality of an item, please let us know on the day you pick-up your order. We will try to determine if it is a normal attribute of the product (grass-fed beef is "gamey" and tripe is very smelly - this is normal, even if it may be unpleasant to deal with). If you are unhappy with a particular cut, all we can do is ask for a better cut for next time. If a product was delivered rotten/damaged to the point where it is not safe to feed when you come to pick it up - we will happily refund you for the cost of the product. Beyond the closing hour on pick-up day, we cannot guarantee freshness of your product.
Be sure to inspect your order carefully before you leave the pick-up location (for correctness, quality and freshness) - this way we can be sure to remedy any problems as quickly as possible.
Are these wholesale prices or is there a mark-up?
There is a small mark-up on most items to cover the cost of weight/price discrepancies when ordering from vendors, freight/shipping, deliveries, and to help pay for things like this website/domain. Membership fees cover additional overhead such as rent and utilities on our location in San Francisco. No person makes a profit in running, organizing, or administrating SFRAW. SFRAW is not a for-profit operation; everyone that makes this group happen works on a volunteer basis.
Why is there a shipping/handling fee added to my order?
There is a 5% shipping/handling fee placed on all orders purchased through the website. This small, worthwhile handling fee enables us to process payments securely online. 100% of this fee covers costs associated with processing orders, and does not go to any individuals associated with the group. It is not a tip or profit.
Do I have to pay taxes on my orders?
The majority of our products are human food products and are sold tax-free. All human-grade, human-consumable food products are not taxed. All other products must be taxed. San Francisco sales tax rate is 9.5%. This is added to all pet food products, supplements, and books, which includes Primal, Rad Cat, Jeffrey's, Honest Kitchen, Know Better/Feline Future, Papa Poochinelli, and Greentripe.com products. Sales tax is added to your order during the online shopping cart check-out process.
How much meat will fit into my freezer?
If you have a large dog or multiple pets, it is a good idea to invest in a freezer. You can find used freezers for a good price on Craig's List or in your local newspaper's classified section.
To gauge how much meat you can fit into your freezer, please refer to the below guides. You'll need:
28 cu. ft. of freezer space for a whole beef carcass (500 lbs. of meat)
14 cu. ft. of freezer space for a half beef carcass (250 lbs. of meat)
7 c u. ft. of freezer space for a split-side beef carcass (125 lbs. of meat)
From a Texas Grass Fed Meats site, "To calculate your storage requirements, figure that 35 pounds of meat requires one cubic foot of freezer space."
Some of you might be surprised how little space so many pounds of meat can occupy. I'm always amazed how much we can cram into our freezer - of course, there isn't any room left for people food after stocking up on pet food! :) How much you can fit into a freezer also depends on how well you can pack it. If you wrap up items up into compact, smaller portions, you will be able to fit much more into your freezer.

How do I find a group like this in my area?
SFRAW has monthly deliery to several different locations throughout the SF Bay Area and Northern-CA including: the city of San Francisco (weekly pick-up available here only), Mendocino, Santa Rosa, San Rafael, Fairfax, Corte Madera, Berkeley, Oakland, Pittsburg, Pacifica, Redwood City, and San Jose. You can find a current list of our pick-up locations here.
Our membership includes residents from all over Northern California - many live in the San Francisco Bay Area counties, and in cities throughout Northern California from Mendocino to Grass Valley to Santa Cruz. You may want to see if other members would be willing to work with you on driving to pick-up orders, so you don't have to drive a long distance each month. However, groups are forming up all over California and the US, so you can usually find one closer to home if you look in the right places.
There is a group with pick-ups available in Fremont, Livermore, Menlo Park, and Galt called the Fremont BARF Co-op. The Fremont BARF group is run by Sharon Goldstein and I do their website for them. Sharon and I are friendly and encourage our members to join both groups.
The Capital City Raw Feeders is a buying group located in the Sacramento area.
There is a large group for residents of Southern and Central California called the SoCal BARF group. They have recently started to service Stockton and Truckee, and are hugely successful throughout most of Southern California.
Nationwide, you may be able to locate a group via one of the e-mail discussion lists (see above link in previous question), on the Carnivore-FeedSupplier list or by simply searching the Yahoo! Groups site for "BARF + coop" or "raw + coop" to find a group near you.
There are currently buying/resource groups in these US areas/states:

Can you recommend veterinarians/pet health care professionals that are supportive of feeding a raw diet?
Although there are veterinarians world-wide who adamantly support feeding a natural, raw foods diet, these veterinarians remain a relatively small segment of the greater veterinary community. Most vets are not well-educated about raw diets and/or are not even necessarily very knowledgeable about pet nutrition. Vets generally learn about pet nutrition in veterinary school where the major pet food companies are the sole source for nutrition information, and provide the textbooks/learning material. Good vets, however, will neither support nor admonish something they know little about, and will be open to enriching their knowledge about not only diet, but all aspects of pet husbandry and healing.
Thus, it can be amazingly difficult to find a vet that is even remotely knowledgeable or supportive of raw diets, and yet it is so important to have one to guide you through the transition and any health problems your pet may face. It is strongly recommended that you find a vet who is supportive of a raw diet should you decide to switch to feeding raw foods, otherwise you will most likely run into many conflicts (they may always first blame the diet for any health problems your dog/cat face under their care, they may not be able to look past the diet to treating the animal, and they can severely undermine your confidence by constantly "knocking" the diet you have chosen).
Below is a list of SFRAW recommended vets, and other pet health care providers (listed by modality in alphabetical order), that are supportive or tolerant of feeding a raw diet. Please be aware that these vets and only these vets - not the entire clinic or hospital - are ones we recommend. Other vets in the same office can be down-right anti-raw or even (gasp) pro-Science Diet!
Those marked with an (*) are highly recommended by Kasie.
