SFRAW Volunteer Job Descriptions
Volunteering is a mandatory requirement for all members that want to place orders with the group. Descriptions, including the set number of hours given for each job, of the various volunteer jobs can be found below.

Specific details for each of the driving jobs can be found here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sfraw/files/ under the folder titled "Pick-up Routes".

With the pick-up and volunteer dates for the group being scheduled for the entire year, this makes it pretty easy for people to plan ahead for when they can/want to volunteer. To review the future SFRAW pick-up days, please see our Calendar page.

DRIVING JOBS:

Name: The James Ranch
Location: Penn Valley, CA (North-East of Sacramento/Marysville)
Day: One time - mid-month, mid-week (usually on Wednesday or Thursday)
Time: Any time of day
Volunteer Credit Given 8-hours.
Avg. Size: 100-200 pounds (fits into 1-2, X-L CostCo coolers).
Seasonal? Usually late Spring through early Fall; but sometimes they can supply us all year.

This is a wonderful field trip to a small, working family farm. The Penn Valley trip requires driving approx. 2.5-3 hours each way from San Francisco. You may end up getting a tour of the ranch, help bring the sheep in from pasture or bottle feed a lamb, so you could spend an additional 1-2 hours at the ranch. You must bring 1-2 large coolers with you to transport the lamb and keep it cold. If you need to borrow our coolers for this, please organize with us to get the coolers before you drive up there. The coolers filled with lamb need to be dropped off at the SF-Napoleon location by no later than 12-Noon on Friday.

Name: Egg Pick-up (from Joellen Burton's house)
Location: Sebastopol, CA
Day: Once a month; day to be arranged with Joellen.
Time: Time to be arranged with Joellen.
Volunteer Credit Given 3-hours.
Avg. Size: up to 50-60 dozen (packed into paper grocery bags)
Seasonal? Yes, only during daylight savings/months with long daylight hours

The eggs can be picked-up whenever it works best for you and Joellen during the weekend/week. They must be handled gently so that they do not break, and kept in a cool, dark place (like a cooler, closet/pantry or garage). They do not need to be kept on ice or in the refrigerator because of their natural handling and natural protective layer. The eggs need to be dropped off at the SF-Napoleon location by no later than 12-NOON on the Friday. The egg order is not heavy (good for "non-lifters"), and will fit into any sized vehicle.

Name: 4-H Rabbit Pick-up (meet Karen Chestnut at a shopping center)
Location: Davis, CA
Day: M-F only; actual day to be arranged with Karen and SFRAW.
Time: 10AM-2PM; actual time to be arranged with Karen and SFRAW.
Volunteer Credit Given 4-hours.
Avg. Size: 50-200 lbs.
Seasonal? No - all year.

You will need to be able to lift up to 40-lbs. and have a vehicle that can transport one of the XL Costco coolers or two-three regular sized coolers to do this job. You will arrange with Karen and us to pick-up the order in Davis and drop-off the order at the SF-Napoleon location. If you need to borrow a cooler for this job, you will need to organize with SFRAW to get the cooler(s) before you go.

ADMINISTRATIVE TYPE JOB:

Name: Volunteer Coordinator

Time: Flexible, though you must get online at least 1-2 times daily until all jobs are filled and confirmed.
Volunteer Credit Given 8-hours.
Seasonal? No - all year.

Download a full description for this job here. Overview: The Volunteer Coordinator solicits for volunteers via e-mail announcements prior to the pick-up date, schedules these volunteers for all the positions for that month's pick-up, and coordinates the volunteers via e-mail to make sure they know what they are doing, when they are doing it, and where they need to go/be; and confirms positions that have been filled. Basically you'll be asking for volunteer help via the e-mail list and following up with those that answer these requests by answering any questions people may have about the positions available that month. You will also need to get confirmations from each volunteer that signed-up early that they are still able to do their job that month. You must check e-mail at least once or twice a day to do this job successfully; but this can be done at any time of day - whatever works for your schedule. The volunteer jobs that you need to fill for that month will be listed in the Yahoo Groups Volunteer Database for your location and that month. Details about the driving jobs can be found in the Yahoo Groups Files section under the folder titled "Pick-up Routes". It is your job to get all jobs covered and positions confirmed no later than three (3) days before each job scheduled.
